What the letter means

The Quant grade is a quantitative model's grade for a stock, set before each US market open. Like the Valuation grade it runs from S, the best, to D, the worst, and it compares the stocks on the model's list with each other rather than with a fixed bar.

GradeWhere the stock sits
SThe best band
AAbove the middle
BThe middle of the field
CBelow the middle
DThe worst band

The model is separate from the site's valuation models. It looks at the stocks in its own way, and its inputs are not published, so the Quant grade is a second opinion beside the Valuation grade, not a restatement of it.

The model and its version

Every Quant grade is printed with the version of the model that set it: "Quant grade B · model v1 · Oct 30". When the model is replaced, the pages follow the new version, and the version beside the letter says which one a grade came from. The site computes none of these grades itself; it shows the current model's, as published.

When it changes

A new grade arrives before each NYSE trading day's open, so the letter on a stock's page is the one the model set for that day's session. A stock's Quant tab (Apple's, for example) shows the grade day by day, shaded over the price, along with how its sector's graded stocks fall from S to D and how its comparable companies are graded.

The overview's Quant section shows the last twenty sessions and, when the letter changed recently, since when the stock has held it ("B since Oct 28").

Not graded, and not covered

Two different things can stand in place of a letter:

  • Not graded: the stock is on the model's list, but one of the model's inputs was missing for it that morning, or the model's data source had nothing for it. It usually comes back the next session.
  • Not covered: the stock is not on the model's list at all. Its pages show no Quant grade.

What the site does not publish

The letter, the model's version and the date are the whole result. The stock's place on the model's list, its score and where the bands are drawn are not published anywhere: not on a page, in the API, in the open datasets or through the MCP server.

What it is not

The Quant grade is a model's output on a given morning. It is not advice, not a price target and not a forecast of what the stock will do.
